James McAlister is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since 2005, he has recorded and/or played live with Sufjan Stevens, Alexi Murdoch, Richard Swift, Jeremy Enigk, Bill Frisell, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner, and many others.
As an artist, James and brother-in-law Casey Foubert released the album "Music For Drums" on the Asthmatic Kitty label. It is a full length record of music made solely from drums and percussion. James also produces electronic-based music under the name 900X.
Upcoming highlights include a 4-show presentation of the piece "Planetarium" at Brooklyn's BAM as well as The Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. James joins Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner and Nico Muhly in this song cycle written for 4 piece band, a trombone septet, and a string quartet.
